In Year 1 the children learn how to count forwards and backwards along number lines and on the hundred square to support their skills for addition and subtraction. They begin to write their own numbers on blank number lines to help show their calculating strategies.
The children need to work hard to remember how to write numbers correctly and we continue to practise the correct formation as well as the correct order. Home support in this area is greatly appreciated.
Other areas of Maths explored during the year include:
2D and 3D Shapes
Measuring length in centimetres and metres
Measuring capacity in litres and milliliters
Measuring mass in grams
Simple exploration of time to the hour and half hour
Recognition of coins
Simple calculations using money
Fractions - whole, half, quarter
Problem solving
