The topic for Term 3 is ‘Animals of cold lands’ and we have begun this topic in Literacy by reading the story, ‘The Penguin who wanted to fly’. This book sparked a great deal of excitement for the children as they knew then that they would be learning about animals. The excitement that the children had from listening to this story allowed them to open their minds and be creative during their learning through play sessions. For example, the children enjoyed creating their own penguin and then using their creations they re-enacted the story. With this story we used our Pi-Corbet technique which gave the children the opportunity to sequence the story independently.
Throughout this term we will continue to read fiction and non-fiction books about the animals from lands. If you would like some ideas of books that you could read at home with you children, here is a list of fiction and non-fiction books;
The best Book of Polar Animals by Christiane Gunzi
Animal Babies in Polar Lands by Kingfisher
Arctic Foxes by Emily Rose Townsend
Walruses of the Arctic by Sara Swan Miller
Hush Little Polar Bear by Jeff Mack
